About Re-Yarn

May 20th, 2008

Re-Yarn uses found and recycled objects to create practical, knit-table art yarn. The idea of recycling old sweaters is interesting to me. While many people unravel the yarn from sweaters and reuse it, I like the idea of spinning into something new and completely different. I love luxury fibers, cashmere, angora, marino, mohair and alpaca. However obtaining the fibers to spin and then sell, can be prohibitively expensive. By recycling sweaters and other found objects, I can create unique and beautiful yarn, with a high-luxury fiber content.

My yarn is hand spun and hand dyed. Each skein is completely unique.

Creating Re-Yarn

I spin the recycled yarn using a variety of methods. I may use whole strips of the sweater, with other fiber as binders. I sometimes chop up the sweater and mix the bits into giant batts and spin those, or I painstakingly pull apart the sweater and ply the yarn with my handspun. Each skein of yarn takes several hours to make and is totally unique.

Supporting Local Farms

The most fiber that I use with the recycled sweaters comes from small farms—many local to North Carolina. I strongly believe in supporting local agriculture and small farmers. When I can’t get fleeces from North Carolina (the climate isn’t conducive to many breeds), I contact local farmers throughout the country to obtain quality fleeces.
